How to Keep a Bag From Losing Its Shape

August 14, 2026

A structured bag that has gone soft and saggy looks tired no matter how nice it is. The shape is most of what makes a bag read as expensive, so it is worth protecting.

Most shape loss comes from two things: storing it empty so it collapses, or carrying it stuffed so it bulges. Here is how to avoid both.

Fill it when you store it

An empty bag folds in on itself and creases. When you store one, stuff it just enough to hold its shape with a purse pillow, bubble wrap, or even a rolled-up sweater. For totes and slouchy styles, a base shaper keeps the bottom flat instead of sagging into a U.

Do not overfill it when you carry it

The other killer is cramming a bag past its limit, which stretches the leather and pops the shape permanently. An organizer insert keeps your things tidy and stops the sides from bulging, and it makes switching bags a ten-second job.

Store it upright

Store bags standing up on a shelf, not stacked on top of each other, since weight on top flattens them. If they must share space, a shelf divider keeps them upright and off each other. Handles up, and never hang a heavy bag by its straps long-term, which stretches them out.

This is general guidance for everyday leather. For high-value, vintage, suede, or exotic bags, spot-test any product in a hidden area first, and consider a professional leather restorer before treating the whole bag. Purr is not responsible for damage from at-home care.
