How to Fix Peeling or Cracked Leather on a Bag

First, figure out what you are dealing with, because it changes everything. Real leather that is cracking is usually just dry and can often be revived. Bonded or faux leather that is peeling in sheets is breaking down, and that is much harder to truly fix.

Set your expectations by the material, and you will save yourself a lot of frustration.

Dry real leather: condition it

If real leather is developing fine cracks, it is thirsty. Clean it, then work in a good conditioner in a few light coats over a few days. This softens the leather and can dramatically reduce the look of surface cracking, though deep cracks will not vanish completely.

Small cracks and scuffs: a repair kit

For small cracks, gouges, or worn corners, a leather repair kit with filler and a color-matched balm can genuinely help. Work slowly in thin layers and build up. Recoloring balms are great for scuffed edges and faded corners.
