How to Clean Tarnished Bag Hardware

Hardware is the jewelry of a bag, and tarnished, cloudy chains and clasps make the whole thing look older than it is. The tricky part is that most bag hardware is plated, not solid metal, so harsh polishes can scratch or strip the finish.

Start as gently as possible and only escalate if you need to.

Start with a polishing cloth

A jewelry polishing cloth brings back a lot of shine on plated hardware with zero risk. Rub gently, and get into the links of chains where grime builds up. For most everyday dullness, this is all you need.

Go easy on polishes

Skip abrasive metal polishes and baking-soda pastes on plated hardware, since they can wear through the plating. If you use a gentle metal cleaner, keep it off the leather and canvas entirely, and wipe it fully dry after.
